discount photography equipment | The Photographer’s Toolbox for Photoshop with Lewis Kemper

The Photographer’s Toolbox for Photoshop with Lewis Kemper
Event on 2012-11-12 09:30:00
Just as a carpenter decides which tools are necessary to build a house, a photographer needs to know which tools in Photoshop will accomplish the task.

Photographers have different needs than graphic artists or web designers. In this workshop we will approach Photoshop from a photographers perspective, not that of a designer or computer geek. Photoshop is one of the most complex and powerful image editing programs available today. Learning how to harness the power and the areas of Photoshop that are essential for the photographer is a challenge. You will go beyond the basics and into more depth.

You need to know the tools, where the menus are, how to create layers and adjustment layers. If you feel you are not comfortable knowing 15-25 % of what Photoshop™ has to offer, then this workshop will expand your knowledge into the remaining portions that are useful to photographers.

Starting with the raw file and working your way through all the refinements to your images we will cover Curves, Selective Color, using Adjustment Layers and masks to apply local changes. You will take that initial raw file and turn it into a masterpiece! And you will also learn how to resize and sharpen images to obtain the finest output.

professional photography equipment | Editing Your Photographs: How to Choose the Best Images From Among the Many with David H. Wells

Editing Your Photographs: How to Choose the Best Images From Among the Many with David H. Wells
Event on 2012-05-11 13:00:00

David H. Wells was recently named one of “The Best Photography Workshop Instructors” by Photo District News (PDN) Click here to see the article.

This workshop will teach you how to choose the best images to improve your projects and portfolio. Bonus: bring in a set of your images (60 and 100 prints) and David Wells will do an actual edit of your work!

As every photographer knows, the very best way to become a better photographer is to take a lot of pictures and edit those down to the best few. In that process, the photographer, ideally, develops an ongoing portfolio and figures out what their strengths areas a photographer. Besides focusing on their more successful photographs, the best photographers understand how to look at their failed images and figure out why those images did NOT work. Like in many pursuits, photographers learn as much or more from their mistakes as they do from their failures.

“The problem is that most photographers cannot edit their own work well. By edit, I mean selecting the best few images from among many which is not the same as making final prints from those select few — which it another class altogether,” explains Wells. “Sometimes photographers are too caught up in the content of the image and other times they are too focused on the emotional experience they underwent as they made the photographs.

“Outsiders looking at the same photographs do not care that the badly framed portrait shows a beloved child nor do they care how the photographer hiked for hours to make the image in question. Looking at the photographs as they are, without explanation, endorsement (or even captions in many cases,) is how almost all end-users of photographs experience them. To be able to edit your own photographs effectively you need to be able to similarly step back and look at the work as an outsider.”

In this workshop, master photographer and teacher, David H. Wells will show you how to edit images with a clear vision. Through a series of exercises, he will train you to look at photographs analytically. He will also take a set of images from each participant, consisting of between 60 and 100 prints (4 x 6 to 8x 10 inch prints only, no digital files) and edit them down to a top twenty. Students leave the class with an education in photo editing AND a professionally executed edit that will cut their large set of images down to a final, tightly edited and clearly defined top twenty.

Fee: if registered before the date of the event; on the day of the event.

Bring a set of images between 60 and 100 prints (see above for details)
